La Mezquita de Cordoba

Our visit to La Mezquita de Cordoba was nothing short of unforgettable!
Built in the 7th century, this incredible sacred site has been
home to a pagan temple, a Christian church, a mosque,
and it now serves as the Cathedral of Cordoba...

Incredible as it may seem, La Mezquita was a functioning and prominent
mosque that served the vast Muslim community of Andalucia for over
FOUR CENTURIES!
It underwent countless restoration and expansion projects under the
reign of various Moorish rulers, and grew in both size and significance...

Among its most recognizable features are
nearly 900 columns of marble, onyx and granite...

 Gilded domes galore...

 Intricate mosaic for miles...

And a courtyard worthy of a lifetime of meditation...

But the most curious characteristic of this "Great Mosque"
has to be the cathedral that you'll find in its very center...

That's right! King Ferdinand couldn't resist making his Catholic
mark on La Mezquita during the Spanish Reconquista of Andalucia
in the 13th century. So, he built a cathedral in the heart of
the greatest mosque Spain had ever seen...

Beyond interesting!
And beyond beautiful, right?!

So, if you're ever in the area,
don't think twice about knocking on these doors--
you will never forget that you did!

I'll see you soon in Granada--
our favorite stop in all of amazing Andalucia!

XO
