Cuentame de Cordoba
/ in
Spain
The next leg on our express tour through Andalucia was Cordoba!
This charming Spanish city has much more of a small town feel,
Just to refresh, The Reading Guy and I flew from our current home
of San Sebastian to Sevilla, where we explored a bit
and then rented a car to head to Cordoba...
The short drive between these two Andalusian treasures
was just lovely and even reminded us a little of our Texas travels...
The 100+ kilometers seemed to fly by as we made
our way through this unique region of Spain...
Once in Cordoba, we lost ourselves navigating its
labyrinth of narrow winding alleyways...
And being lost was never more fun!
We came across countless tourist targeted boutiques,
offering everything from vestidos Sevillanas...
To intricate hand made fans and jewelry...
And we eventually made our way to the heart of historic Cordoba...
One of Spain's oldest cities, Cordoba is sprinkled with
vestiges not only of a rich Moorish history...
vestiges not only of a rich Moorish history...
But of a Roman past as well.
This bridge was built in the early 1ST CENTURY BC!
And while it has undergone extensive restoration,
it was the city's lone bridge for over TWENTY CENTURIES...
By the 9th century, Cordoba had served as a center of Roman imperialism
and had become a cultural gem for its Moorish inhabitants
and Europe as a whole. And by the 13th century, an entire continent sang
the praises of this intellectual capital, while its rulers didn't waste
any time making it their own personal paradise...
Built in the 14th century by the immensely powerful Alfonso XI,
El Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos served as the monarchs' headquarters
for nearly a decade during the Catholic reconquest of nearby Granada...
No detail was too small for the Spanish royals who called this palace home...
And now regular ol' people like The Reading Guy and I get to admire
its beauty and document it by taking cheesy romantic pictures...
But what makes Cordoba all the more
unforgettable is a visit to its famed
MEZQUITA!
More on that tomorrow...
Thanks for stopping by!
