Escasos Metros

When we began the search for a new home away from home in San Sebastian,
we were surprised to learn that in spite of the
considerable demand for apartment rentals in this incredible city,
only about 5% of all local residents are renters...

Leaving countless students of the four local universities (ourselves included) to
to fight for
a bed a to sleep in at night...

And while this may seem like the beginning of a tragic tale about how we ultimately weren't able to find a decent place to (temporarily) call our own,
OUR STORY IS JUST
THE OPPOSITE!!!

It all began when we came across the rental advertisement, which read:

"A escasos metros de la playa..."

Which, although, literally translates to:

"Only meters away from the beach..."

Can also be loosely interpreted as:

Hey, READING GIRL,
Don't be a cheap-o for once in your life
and
splurge a little on this precious little place--
It'll be the best money you've ever spent!

And boy was that advertisement right!!!

We followed our hearts and went for the dream PISO (Spanish for apartment/flat) straight away!

And our lovely new temporary home
 REALLY is VERY CLOSE
to the most prominent local beach--only 2 blocks, to be precise...

And while, surely, the charming little neighborhood that we call home has
MUCH MORE
to offer than its proximity to the beach...

That might best be explored in a whole other post ;o)
So for now, let's take a look at the premier attraction of San Sebastian
and our new close neighbor--
La Playa de la Concha...

San Sebastian's prime draw has long been its beautiful beaches, the most famous of which is
La Concha..

A lovely white ornate wrought iron balustrade runs along the entire length of the promenade of
La Concha...

And is altogether a city symbol...

This large walking and gathering area that stretches along the entire beach is lively and tranquil at once...

Family and friends gather...

Diamonds in the rough are showcased...

Some youngsters play a game or two...

And some brave souls bask in the sun for an hour or two
(yes, even in late October)...

Some--just take in the positively incredible views...

There is also no shortage of tasty treats at La Concha...

At the appropriately named
Cafe de La Concha, the wonderful (and modestly-priced)
traditional basque Pintxos are matched only by the view...

Not only of the beach, but of completely uninhibited beach-go'ers!

Dessert at this candy stand that has called the promenade home for over 25 years, will only set you back 2 Euro!

Oh, and free Wi-fi in almost every corner of the city makes for easy Skype-ing with loved ones far away...

Another La Concha attraction is the Palacio Miramar...

Remember that The Reading Guy and I got engaged at this former royal summer palace on an old white bench nearly 4 years ago...

Maybe we can return again some day when we look a little more like these two cuties...

The views from Miramar's gorgeous lawns are some of the best in city--dare I say the world?

And the walk BACK to our little PISO wasn't too shabby either...

Nature at its best...

Hope you get to visit this little slice of heaven one day--
and if you do, we'll meet you at La Concha!

 Thanks for stopping in...

XOXO,
