One of the very first substantial furniture transformations that I tackled was this little piece of work...
Clearly, this is not my mom--but I just couldn't resist myself some Kristen Wiig :oP
This sofa was an ABSOLUTE STEAL at $75!!! How could I possibly pass it up? And in the interest of full disclosure I must clarify that the picture above is not the ACTUAL original sofa that I bought and made over. Unfortunately, we never took any "before" pictures. But the wooden legs, arms and gold damask upholstery are identical to and completely representative of what I started out with. The only difference between our sofa and the one pictured above is that ours does not have the wood framing around the top and sides--SO THERE, I'm glad I got that off my chest :o)
Ok, back to the transformation...
Fortunately for me our sitting room, I was able to see far beyond the tattered upholstery and DARK wood stain and envisioned something along these lines...
Hey...a girl can dream, right?
It goes without saying that I was NOT willing to pay thousands of dollars to bring a little bit of
Paris into our "parlor"...
But I WAS willing to bargain my way into possessing the beautiful silk fabric that was just what the Design Doctor ordered for our diamond in the rough...

Well, because this was my very first make over and because I didn't have a blog or a camera or any reason to think that anyone would care, I am sorry to say that there are ZERO pictures of the original sofa, fabric, paint, and their are NO pictures of the actual process either.
SO SAD, especially given the fact that this darling little French inspired...

--let's call it a SETTEE, because we like to imagine we are fancy that way--
Is now one of my most prized possessions...

I hold it dear, mostly because it never judged my naive use of a non-electric staple gun...
Or my lack of adequate measuring skills that nearly led to more than one upholstery disaster...

Or my supreme cheapness neglecting to invest in a rubber mallet for nailhead-ing (although, I really liked how my metal hammer enhanced the antique aesthetic I was aiming for )...

Or my delusions of French grandeur in our tumbleweed-ridden tiny Texas town...
I hope that my GAZILLION post-op pictures more than made up for my lack of pre-makeover documenting :o)
Thanks for visiting!
XOXO,

Wow $75 is a great deal for your settee! It's lovely. You did a great job! Especially with the nailhead trim. I hope I can find one for that price, I've been on the hunt for one for awhile now.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I'm a Texan too. I just moved back to Houston about 6 months ago! And I'm your newest follower! Hope you can stop by my blog and follow me too :).

Thanks, Emily! I am actually headed to HOUSTON for the long weekend and already have plans for some "treasure" hunting :o)
ReplyDeleteWell, miss reading girl....I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading this post. What a lovley and brave tranformation. It's gorgeous! You are a very talented author:) Thanks for linking your sofa! If it were mine, it would be my favorite thing too;)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Kelli! I really appreciate getting the opportunity to connect with other bloggers as I am very new to this. So THANK YOU for allowing us to share :o)
ReplyDeleteOmigosh! You did an awesome job transforming the settee! It does look really frenchy mon cherie!
ReplyDelete-Marie
Thanks, Marie! Coming from the French design connoisseur that you are, I think that is quite the compliment :o)
ReplyDeleteLove the transformation! Have a great day!

MERCI a million times over for following!
ReplyDeleteDe Mozzer/Grazie: great similarity in the photo---I was shocked when I first saw that thing and now am so proud of it as well as the ambience of the room....Love ya
ReplyDeleteMy dearest Grazie, thanks for your kind words! This diamond in the rough was found in HOUSTON, just like the others we will hopefully be finding this weekend, YAY!!!
ReplyDeleteThis settee is fabulous. I did a makeover on a goodwill settee and like you used a manual stapler, my hands were cramped for days LOL. I had a rubber mallet but it was huge and unwieldy so I also used my small metal hammer...dinged that trim up real good LOL. its quite imperfect but I still love it and I love yours as well especially that silk fabric and those gorgeous pillows.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Karen! When I found it, I never in a million years thought it would become such an important part of our home design. It is literally the first thing you see when you walk in the front door, and it seems to welcome you with open arms every time.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, too :o)
What a lovely settee Miss Reading Girl. I swoon whenever I see pieces like this, but I fear my family wouldn't like all of the wood trim :(. I love all of the tack work you did, it's just beautiful and worth all of you efforts--and yummy silk! Hugs, Kim
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kim! As I mentioned in the post, the settee was my VERY FIRST project of this nature--frankly, I had no idea what I was doing :o)
ReplyDeleteBut I read as much as I could on the subject matter and got to work! I swear that it was actually really easy to do--YAY for that!
You blog cracked me up, and inspired me all at the same time. I couldn't help but giggle at the excellent effort to compensate for your own lack of photos.... It definitely made your sofa reveal worth it! I love it, wonderful job.
ReplyDeleteI am your newest follower!
Well thank you so much, Sarah! I appreciate everyone's understanding--since ordinarily I really enjoy documenting the process and (hopefully) helping others to learn along the way :o)
ReplyDeleteI have some really great projects in the works and I am SO glad that you might be back to see them! I promise, I won't disappoint ;o)
You are one brave gal! That's a HUGE project for a first time! Kudos to you and it looks AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Christie! I am quite happy with the result :o)
ReplyDeleteI also really liked visiting tour blog; your design approach is beautiful!
I agree with Christie above, you are brave! I think I might've seen the potential but I'm sure I never ever would've actually had the guts to follow through on the transformation. Excellent job, I'm glad I visited~
ReplyDeleteThanks, "Etc." If I could do this, believe me, anybody can! It was my first and probably my favorite DIY project to date! But I hope you'll stay tuned for what I have coming up :o)
ReplyDeleteWOW! It's gorgeous!! I can't believe it was one of your first projects...it would not have looked near that good if i tried it lol
ReplyDeleteThanks, Janna! I am sure it would look amazing for anyone who would give it a whirl! And for $75, WHY NOT try it? There isn't much to lose :o)
ReplyDeleteWOW It's fabulous, so pretty!

ReplyDeleteThank you, Karen! It's one of my favorites :o)
ReplyDeleteThis settee came out amazing! I love the silk, it looks very elegant and rich.
ReplyDeleteI also have a smaller settee that I have been procrastinating to redo. Seeing your beautiful results kinda giving me the push I need! Thanks for inspiring!
Thanks, Sheer Serendipity! I think that settees are greatly rewarding transformations because they produce huge results in such a small package :o)
ReplyDeleteYour sette turned out beautifully! I am just finishing up on my settee. I just need to glue on the double welting. It is amazing the sense of satisfaction you get pouring in your own blood, sweat, and tears.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Inspired! Good luck on your finishing touches--sometimes they are what matter most :o)
